원기 105년 대각개교절을 맞이하여 원각성존 소태산 대종사의 대각을 경축하고 원불교의 개교를 경축하고 재가·출가 전 교도의 공동생일을 경축 드립니다. 오늘 우리는 대종사께서 이 땅에 오신 뜻을 다시 되새기면서 대종사의 일대 경륜이 하루속히 실현되어 이 땅에 영과 육의 무지 질병 빈곤이 없는 낙원이 되기를 염원 드립니다.

오늘날 국가와 세계는 코로나19로 인하여 많은 분이 생명을 잃고 고통과 괴로움 속에서 지내고 있습니다. 이러한 일들이 하루속히 진정되어 국가와 세계가 안정을 얻기를 기도합니다. 또한 이 일을 해결하기 위하여 최전선에서 고군분투하시는 모든 분들에게 감사와 위로를 드립니다.

대종사께서는 장차 상상하지 못할 이상세계가 도래한다고 희망을 주시면서 그 세상은 저절로 오는 것이 아니라 우리가 모두 마음의 병을 고치고 전 인류와 우주 만유가 하나임을 알고 상생으로 하나가 될 때 이루어진다고 하셨습니다. 오늘 우리는 이러한 대종사의 구세제중의 거룩한 뜻을 마음에 새기고 열반을 앞두시고 유촉하신 최후 법문을 다시 받들면서 우리의 마음을 새로이 다지고자 합니다.

대종사께서는 열반을 앞두시고 교단의 장래에 관계되는 다음의 열 가지 말씀을 자주 부촉하셨습니다.

1. 도가의 생명은 법의 혜명을 이어받아 전하는 일이니, 후세 영원토록 이 법의 맥박이 길이 쉬지 않게 모든 노력을 경주하라.
2. 법을 위하여서는 몸을 잊고, 공을 위하여서는 사를 놓는 대의의 기풍을 길이 진작하라.
3. 법은 일반 동지의 앞에 서서 세우고, 공은 일반 동지의 뒤에 서서 양보하는 알뜰한 일꾼들이 많이 나오게 하라.
4. 법을 맡은 사람이 나의 법 계통을 올바로 받지 아니하고 사의로 사법을 내어 교법을 어지럽히는 일이 없게 하라.
5. 교단 일을 맡은 사람이 편증 편애를 써서 교중의 통일을 방해하는 일이 없게 하라.
6. 출가 교도는 시방세계 일체중생을 위하여 전무출신하였다는 정신을 서로 챙기고 재가 교도는 재욕 무욕한 거진출진 정신을 서로 챙겨서 교도 한 사람 한 사람이 교중 전체 면을 지켜 나가기에 다 같이 노력하라.
7. 교법이 있고 제 마음이 있으며 교중이 있고 제 몸이 있다는 선공후사의 대의로 재가·출가가 합심 노력하라.
8. 나의 법을 시방세계에 두루 선포할 전법의 일꾼들이 계속 나와서 세계를 정화시키고 불국 정토를 이 지상에 건설하도록 계속 노력하라.
9. 교중의 잘못은 그 허물을 자기가 차지하고 교중의 잘된 일은 그 공을 교중과 교도에게 돌리며, 오직 이 법을 잘 실행함으로써 서로서로 전 교도의 좋은 사우가 되라.
10. 위로는 삼계의 큰 스승이 되고 아래로 사생의 자비스러운 어버이가 되려는 큰 서원과 신성으로 일관하라.

이 말씀은 재가·출가 모든 교도가 마치 부모님의 유언처럼 깊이 마음에 새기고 실천해야 할 정신이라 생각합니다. 지금 우리는 교단 3대 말과 4대 초를 앞두고 있습니다. 이 시점에서 진정 우리가 교단과 국가와 세계를 위해서 해야 할 일이 무엇인지 대종사님의 유촉 말씀을 통해 마음에 깊이 새기고 노력해나가야 하겠습니다.

오늘날 국가와 세계가 당면하고 있는 모든 어려움이 슬기롭게 잘 극복되기를 염원합니다. 나아가 구세 성자이신 대종사의 경륜이 우리 모두의 노력으로 잘 실현되어 인류가 광대 무량한 낙원에서 즐기시기를 법신불 사은전에 축원 드립니다.

宗 法 師

 

As we greet the day of Great Enlightenment and the Founding Day on the one hundred and fifth year of Won Buddhism, I celebrate the Great Enlightenment of our Founding Master Sotaesan, the Holy Honored One of Perfect Wisdom and Supreme Enlightenment. I also commemorate the founding of Won Buddhism, and congratulate all the lay and ordained members on this shared celebration day.

Today, as we bear in mind the Founding Master’s purpose and intent in coming to this land, I pray with all my heart that the grand vision and plan of the Founding Master will be realized soon, that this world will become a paradise free from ignorance, disease, and poverty of mind, body or spirit.

Currently, numerous people in countries worldwide lost their lives and suffer from pain as a consequence of COVID-19. 
I pray that this outbreak will pass as quickly as possible so the nation and the world may stabilize. 
Furthermore, I extend my deep gratitude and consolation to everyone who is suffering on the front lines to solve this problem. 

The Founding Master has filled us with great hope saying that in the future an unimaginably ideal world will come about. He further said that the world to come would not come about of its own accord, but this would only be realized when we cure the illness of the mind and body, and awaken to the truth of the oneness of humanity and all things in the universe, and that we become one in the spirit of mutual life giving. 

Today, we renew and strengthen our minds by recalling the Founding Master’s sacred intent and vision, saving the world by delivering all sentient beings from suffering; thus honoring his last dharma discourse he entrusted to us before his attainment of nirvana.
 
Nearing nirvana, the Founding Master earnestly requested we follow these ten principles in the future of our spiritual tradition.

Since the life of a spiritual tradition is to inherit and transmit the wisdom of the dharma (transmitting the dharma lamp), you need to devote all your efforts so that the pulse of this dharma lineage will always exist for the good of many generations to come.

2. You should spend time arousing the spirit of Won Buddhism’s main principle by giving up thinking about the body and embracing the dharma, by letting go of the self and focus on the benefit to the public.

3. You are to inspire and encourage numerous wholehearted workers to present the dharma before fellow colleagues, and when it comes to merits, give such credit to fellow colleagues.

4. You are not to let dharma teachers and instructors disturb these teaching by creating a dharma of their own out of personal opinions without correctly and rightly receiving the lineage of my dharma lineage.

5. You are not to let those in charge of the affairs of the Order obstruct the unity and harmony of the Order by showing bias, hatred or partiality.

6. Ordained members should check with each other to maintain the spirit that “we have consecrated ourselves as ministers for all sentient beings throughout the world”; lay members should check with one another to ensure their own spirit is not burdened by desire or greed even if this world is filled with selfish behavior. We should lead an unselfish life even in a greedy and egotistic world. By doing so, each and every member strives to guard the deep values of our spiritual tradition.

7. You are to work together with one accord under the main principle of “the public before the personal”, the teaching that is: the dharma should come foremost in one’s mind and the Order take precedence over one’s bodily and personal interests.

8. You are to exert constant effort to encourage and train the practitioners to spread the dharma throughout the world so that this world will be purified and a pure buddha-land can be established on earth.

9. You are to keep any fault for yourself when something has gone wrong in the Order and attribute any merit to the Order and its members when the Order has achievements. Become good teachers and friends of all the members and each other by always practicing this dharma diligently.

10. Your actions should be consistent with great belief and dedication. Make a vow to become great teachers throughout the triple worlds and compassionate parents of the four forms of birth.
 

These words are meant to embody the spirit of Won Buddhism. May they be deeply impressed on the minds of all lay and ordained members and practiced as if they were the last words of our parents.

We are now ahead of the end of the third generation and at the beginning of the fourth generation of the Won Buddhist Order.

Right now, we are called to engage our minds fully on behalf of all peoples of all nations through the Founding Master’s words which he entrusted us with his great vision. We need to exert our efforts and realize it.

I sincerely pray that all difficulties facing this and every nation be successfully overcome. Furthermore, I sincerely pray before the Dharmakāya Buddha, Fourfold Grace, that our Founding Master’s plan and great vision to save this world is made real by our collective efforts, and may humanity rejoice in a vast and immeasurable paradise.
