This month’s article is about nature and humans. Here, I mean nature as anything that is not artificial or created by humans. Of course, we are actually also part of nature, but we have now started to modify our environment in such radical ways that it starts to differ from the environment in which we evolved as a species. We have therefore started to speak of nature or the natural environment as something separate from us. Nowadays, where many of us spend most of the lives in cities and built-up environments, we have also developed an understanding of nature as something healthy and good and something that we long for.

eing humans, most of us take many good things for granted and only really appreciate things when they are becoming rare. When I was a child, there were many more insects around. I remember that, after a long car ride on the motorway, the windscreen and the front of the car was full of dead insects that had collided with the car. These days, cars are still very clean even after a long road trip. So, what happened to the insects? There are many speculations why, but most of them suggest that it is because of all the chemicals that are used by humans. Because of that, I now try to grow more flowers in the garden and even keep a stack of leaves and sticks around to attract insects.

When visitors come to New Zealand, they often comment how green everything is around here, but when you look closely, you can see that it is nature that is arranged and controlled by humans. Many gardens are well groomed, with gardeners focusing on every detail to make it look how they want it to be. Unfortunately, that means that many weeds and herbs are considered undesirable. Instead of accepting dandelion and wild flowers as part of nature, many people make their garden look like a golf course. In addition to that, the city council uses a lot of weed killer in the streets so that the curbs look tidy. The excess weed killer then flows elsewhere, and who knows where all this poison will eventually end up?

So, when you look beyond the surface of such highly controlled gardens, it really only gives you the illusion that you are in nature. If we really want to nurture and appreciate nature, should we not try to stop controlling it so much? Should we not appreciate nature for what it is really like instead of how we want it to look?

Of course, gardening and planting vegetables will always involve an element of modifying where and when certain plants grow. But when we do it, we need to remember to remain in harmony with it and not to be too controlling. For readers in Korea, I cannot recommend anything specific because gardens and the environment are very different there. But I encourage you to reflect on the impact that your behaviour is having and whether you are really noticing nature as it is or only see it as an reflection of how you want it to be.

When Hotawon-nim (An Seongju Kyomunim) took me to Yeongwang a while back, it left a long-lasting impression on me. She took me for a walk with other kyomunims in the beautiful landscape. And while there were gardens, there was enough wild uncontrolled nature. Every now and then, one or two of the kyomunins were gone, and I was looking around for them. The next moment, they came back to the path carrying some herbs or plants – not much, just a little bit to enjoy and perhaps have for dinner. This reminded me to maintain a balance and stay in harmony with nature.

Nature is utterly fair and impartial. It follows a certain regularity that we need to recognise. If we really want to enjoy and appreciate nature, we need to accept it and not try to impose our will on it so much. This is a way to reciprocate the grace received from heaven and earth.
